African trip is chance of a lifetime
March 28th, 2006An adventurous sixth form student is jetting off to South Africa for three months' voluntary work.
"I'm really looking forward to it. There are going to be people from all around the world there. Rachael Keightley (17), who is in Year 13 at Tollbar Business and Enterprise College, New Waltham, has won a place on the 2006 Global Adventures Project.
She was one of only 20 selected from more than 600 applicants.
In July, Rachael will fly to Cape Town where she will work in a primary school, help in an orphanage and assist in building shelters.
She will also work in the Cotlands Hospice, which provides a home for children orphaned by, or suffering from, HIV or Aids.
The Rotary Club of Grimsby St James has been involved in fundraising for the centre.
Rachael, who will study law at university when she gets back, applied to the project after seeing a notice at school.
She said: "I did not even know if I wanted to go when I applied. At first I was going to go to China but then South Africa seemed more interesting.
"I wanted to go to South Africa because the programme includes a course at the Stellenbosch University where we will be staying."
She had to have an interview with the organisers to win the trip of a lifetime.
The Global Adventures Project is a division of the American Institute for Foreign Study which, since it was founded in 1964, has sent more than a million young people abroad on educational programmes.
Rachael, who is studying for A-Levels in law, English and Geography, said: "I'm really looking forward to it now and meeting new friends. There are going to be people from all around the world there.
"I hope to get some independence."
Although the trip costs £14,000, she has to find only £450 thanks to sponsorship from the HSBC Educational Trust.
An accomplished musician, she is organising a concert in Scartho's St Giles' Church Hall on Sunday, April 9, at 11am.
She will be playing the oboe, saxophone and piano.
