Keeper Scott Gets an England Call-up

January 23rd, 2007

Scott Drury was delighted when a letter dropped through his door confirming his selection. He will be invited to take part in an overseas training camp at Villarreal in Spain, before hopefully lining-up for his country against Belgium, Scotland, the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales in a series of matches.

The team will also embark on a tour of China in April.

Drury has long been regarded as a quality keeper in local soccer circles, and was offered a YT place at Grimsby Town a few years ago.

However, he opted instead to pursue an academic career first and foremost.

While studying for his A-levels at Toll Bar Business and Enterprise College, New Waltham, the 18-year old has continued to impress between the sticks for the college side, the county team and also for Brigg Town's youth set-up.

Only 17 of the nation's most promising players have been called up for England duty, but Scott's inclusion comes as no surprise to those who have seen him develop.

Martin Birtwhistle, head of PE at Toll bar, said: "He has been a wonderful ambassador for school sport.

"He is the current first XI captain, and has been for two years.

"He can also play as a centre-back and leads by example. He is a credit to both his college and his family.

"Scott was offered a youth place by Grimsby Town - and was not unaware of the golden chalice of being a part of a professional football club.

"It can all turn out to be a hollow dream, though. Scott knew that and decided if he was good enough, he would still achieve his aims while studying as well."

Scott will be presented with his international uniform and training kit while at a Lilleshall training weekend.

The former New Waltham Primary School pupil said: "It didn't sink in at first - it was a bit of surprise when I found out I had been selected.

"I can't wait to go to Spain and then the tour of China - it will be brilliant.

"China under-18s beat England under-18s last time they played so we will be out for a bit of revenge."
