Cup Glory for Tollbar Year 8s!
November 26th, 2007
Tollbar’s Year 8 football team have been crowned Grimsby and District football champions following an excellent performance beating Matthew Humberstone 6 – 0 in the final. In a game dominated by the Waltham school it was Tollbar who made the early running with the pace of Matty Kingston and Patrick Atkin troubling the opposition defence. Tollbar spurned numerous early opportunities including a Matty Kingston effort which struck the inside of the post. With the score at a deadlock centre backs Ben Cuff and Billy Allen looked assured against the lively Matthew Humberstone front two ensuring that chances were at a premium.
The first goal eventually arrived 20 minutes into the game when Laurence Mckay latched onto a Patrick Atkin pass to cut inside and fire his side into the lead. Tollbar continued to dominate with Sam Topliss and Ben Brown pulling the strings in midfield. Despite this domination no further goals ensured the score remained 1 – 0 at the interval.
The second half continued much like the first with Tollbar bossing the game. A combination of wasteful finishing and good goalkeeping kept the score at 1 – 0 and it looked as though a second goal would never arrive. Jordan Boyington had other ideas though and smashed a first time effort home to double the advantage. This eased the pressure and Tollbar began playing some superb football. Boyington then beat the keeper at his near post to double his tally and further Tollbar’s advantage.
At the other end Tommy Webster ensured a well earned clean sheet for his side with a superb reflex save. With their solid defensive base Tollbar pushed forward with Ben Cuff, now in midfield, spraying the ball around. Lively forward Matty Kingston quickly added two goals of his own to put the game out of Matthew Humberstone’s reach. It was then left to substitute Chris Baumber to wrap up proceedings with the sixth and final goal of the afternoon.
So well done to the Tollbar boys for a magnificent performance and they can now hope to have a good run in this year’s County Cup.
