Tollbar BEC v Cambridge 5-0: Place for last 32 in England
February 1st, 2008
After well-deserved victories in the local and county cups, Tollbar BEC football team now faced their toughest challenge to date, playing within the last 64 schools in the country and aiming for a place within the last 32.
As the infamous knockout scenario rear its unsightly head, each player was clear of what was needed if they were to remain in the fight for supremacy. As both teams approached the pitch it appeared all were in high spirits for what was set to be a marvellous and challenging game of year 11 football.
At the start of the game it revealed a rather shaky first touch by Cambridge, the ball being played at fast pace by Tollbar BEC and the visitors not being given much time to gather composure and settle into their game. Tollbar BEC ruthlessly dominating play, accurately passing the ball from player to player up and down the park. Sam Brooks and Callum Green both placing their usual touch added to a quick and early 1st goal scored by Josh Fuller.
Cambridge not appearing to be dishearten by the early score line played some clever football in and around Tollbar BEC defence, although Tollbar BEC’s back four (Creasey,Carlton,Gray and Sylvester) looking every bit the calm and collected customer under pressure applying great force and consistency when called upon. As the game continued in Tollbar BEC’s favour it was not long before some great sgoals were scored by both Tom Pell and Sam Brooks, leaving the first half in style (3-0 Tollbar).
As the halftime interval advanced both sides started the second half full of energy and enthusiasm. Cambridge made some excellent advances forward playing several high balls into Tollbars defence; these long balls were keenly matched with excellent and strong defensive play from Mark Gray, Christain Carlton and Goal keeper Jamie Petronzio. As the second phase of play continued Tollbar BEC capitalised on Cambridge’s un-relaxed state breaking the oppositions defence with a ball from Shaun Maughton into the box opening up play to give Callum Green the final touch to place into the back of the net (4-0 Tollbar).
Changes made within the second half brought on Ben Leggett, Danny Waugh and Jack Shearer who all made strong contributions to Tollbars defence and attack. As the opposing side began to withdraw it was clear that Tollbar had once again regained sight of victory and the game was brought to close with an excellent 5th and second of the match scored by Tom Pell. The final result of 5-0 to Tollbar reflecting an excellent performance played by the year 11’s. It seems to all that the dreams of the un, duex, trios are alive and well! Congratulations to all players for making it down to the last 32 – Excellent result all round!
