Tollbar Record Comprehensive Victory
December 5th, 2006
Tollbar BEC 4 – 0 South Hunsley High School
The Tollbar year 7 football team continued their impressive start with a comprehensive win over South Hunsley in the 4th round of the ESFA cup. Conditions ensured that passing football was at a premium and the first half proved a real war of attrition. With the weather dominating the first half had very little goal mouth incident with both defences looking well organised. Tollbar looked threatening through the pacey Matty Kingston but his runs forward were thwarted by the vistors backline. The best moment for the home side in the opening half was when Laurence Mckay broke through but was bravely saved by the South Hunsley keeper.
At the other end the Tollbar rearguard were holding firm to repel the visitors forays forward. Ben Cuff, filling in at centre back for the ill Jack Redfearn, looked assured as the home defence dealt comfortably with their physical opponents. Cuff was supported ably by full-backs Shaun Cadden and Shaun Topliss who produced dogged performances to ensure that the score remained goalless at the interval.
With Tollbar now having the better of the conditions the second half proved to be a very different story from the outset. Midfielders Sam Topliss and Ben Brown quickly established control in the engine room giving the hosts a platform to play some measured football. Good work from Brown released Greg Hornby on the right whose excellent delivery was met by a firm header from Lawrence McKay. This produced a fine save from the away sides keeper but his save dropped to the feet of Jordan Boyington who slotted home to break the deadlock.
Having gained the initiative Tollbar quickly doubled their lead when a Sam Topliss free-kick was met with a thumping header by Billy Allen. This goal capped a fine display from Allen who played through the pain and was a rock at the heart of the home side’s defence. With a two goal advantage the home side began to dominate proceedings and the visitors struggled to get out of their own half. The incessant pressure eventually took its toll when Jordan Boyington headed home to make the score 3 – 0. There was still time left for Tollbar to breach the visitors defence on a fourth and final occasion. It was that man again, Jordan Boyington, who slotted home to complete his hat-trick and round off a fine man of the match display.
Boyington’s hat-trick provided a fitting finish to an excellent display from the Tollbar team who should be very proud of their efforts after a superb display. Manager Mr Donnelly was full of praise for his player’s efforts particularly their second half display which defied the difficult conditions. Tollbar can now look forward to a home tie in the last 64 of the ESFA national schools competition.
