Holly takes England under-18 crown

July 30th, 2007
Holly Clyburn finished fourth.

HOLLY Clyburn finished in fourth place after a wind-buffeted final two rounds of the English Ladies Strokeplay Championship in Cumbria.

But the Cleethorpes 16-year-old had the satisfaction of winning the under-18 title.
England international Jodi Ewart claimed her first national title when she won the event by two shots at Silloth-on-Solway.

Jodie (19), from Catterick but at college in New Mexico, also won the U23 and U21 trophies.
She moved into the lead with a two over par 75 in the third round of the 72-hole tournament, which was played in relentless strong winds and added another 75 in the final round.

Jodi was 12-over par for the tournament, two clear of Danielle Montgomery (Lambourne). Sarah Attwood (Gog Magog) climbed the leaderboard into third place, helped by a third round of level par 73. She finished on 15-over.

Holly, who plays from Woodhall Spa, held the lead at the halfway stage but fell back to fourth place over the final 36 holes with a pair of 80s.

But her play impressed the spectators as she took the Under-18 trophy.

Her final round included an eagle three at the par five 14th.

But her cause was not helped when she ran up a triple bogey seven at the par four 11th in the third round.

The tough conditions during the championship were reflected by the CSS which was 76, 77, 78, 76.
