No Need to Starve at University

November 26th, 2007

Tollbar’s prospective university students are set to enjoy a far more nutritious – and less expensive – life away from home, thanks to an innovative scheme launched by the Technology Department.

Mrs Woods and Mrs Moore have introduced extra-curricular Cooking on a Budget sessions where sixth form students learn how to prepare nutritional meals from fresh ingredients.

“One of the things they have found out is that they can make a meal for six people for around £3,” Mrs Woods said. “We make a bolognaise sauce with a tin of tomatoes, tomato puree and some stock cubes, all of which cost very little compared to the price of a jar of ready made sauce.

“We’ve done Cajun chicken with creamy pasta, sausage casserole and corned beef hash and we also include a dish that you could cook for a boyfriend or girlfriend or for a special occasion.

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. When my son went to university, he was the only one in the house he shared who knew how to cook.”

The students prepare two dishes a week over the six sessions and are given a book of 18 recipes to take with them to university.
