Operation Lifestylers

November 26th, 2007
Bradley Churchyard has a much improved look thanks to the efforts of four Tollbar students.

Hannah Holden, Eve Whitehead, Charlotte Windley and Ella Hicking decided that tidying up the church’s surroundings would be their summer holiday project for Operation Lifestyle.

“It had needed doing for ages,” Hannah said. “The railings were really rusty and it was very untidy.

“We had to get permission from the Parish Warden, the Parish Council and the Vicar before we could start.”

That permission was granted and the Year 8 girls, together with their friend Olivia Clark, who is in Year 6 at Tealby Primary School, set to work.

“We had to wire brush the railings to get the rust off which was the hardest job of all,” Ella recalled. “Then we painted the railings and planted flowers around the graves. We tidied up the paths and the graves that hadn’t been cared for.

“We bought 16 bags of gravel to put round the church and matched it up with what was on the graves.”

The group also put in a compost bin and “did a lot of weeding”.

They drummed up support from a number of local companies to finance their efforts – seed merchants Haith donated £50, the Parish Council contributed £25 and a further £6.50 came from people in the village.

In addition, Pennell’s Garden Centre gave them 82 plants and B&Q gave them a discount on the gravel and the paint.

The only help they received was from Eve’s grandfather who gave them advise on what they should do, did some wire brushing with them and drove them to B&Q.

When the Operation Lifestyle judging came round, their efforts resulted in a prize of tickets to Alton Towers.
