February 21st, 2008
Brainboxes log on to the Grimsby Telegraph's website www.thisisgrimsby.co.uk to become champions.
That was the secret of the Tollbar Business and Enterprise College's victory in the North East Lincolnshire Secondary Schools' Quiz competition. The Tollbar team scored 134 points in the annual general knowledge quiz.
A total of 88 students took part in the quiz, involving 13 schools in North East Lincolnshire.
Hereford School, Grimsby, hosted the event.
Organiser and chairman of Grimsby And District Quiz League Malcolm Towle praised the students' enthusiasm and intelligence.
He said: "Doing this is such a delight and seeing the kids' involvement and enthusiasm is wonderful."
The Tollbar winners received a cheque for £100 and a trophy.
Team member Bryony Webb said the team had scoured the Grimsby Telegraph and its website to keep up with current affairs.
They scored heavily with Hot Off The Press questions, which included: What is the date of Great Grimsby Day?
Tom Crump said: "We scored full marks for that."
Team member Jake Brown said: "It was down to teamwork and consistency. We all had bit of knowledge and looked at the paper and the Grimsby Telegraph website."
The winning team included Ash Rendall-Tyrrell, Adam Craven, Tom Crump, Kieran North, Tom Latimer, Bryony Webb, Kayleigh Thomson and Jake Brown.
Mr Towle thanked fellow league organisers Prue Whincup, Tree Singltton, Andrew hunter, Dave Shearsmith Geoff Turner, Dick Birtles and Sheila Mercer for their support, and sponsors Wilkin Chapman, Parkway Cinema and North East Lincolnshire Childrens' Services.
Schools taking part were Tollbar Business and Enterprise College, Whitgift School, Oasis Academy, Immingham, Havelock Academy, Humberston School, Hereford School, Lindsey Community Arts College, Wintringham, St James' School, St Mary's School and Matthew Humberstone School.
