In Frame For Future Success

February 26th, 2008

Young entrepreneurs of the future have been selling their wares to Grimsby shoppers.

As part of a Young Enterprise Yorkshire and Humber scheme, school pupils from across the region have established their own companies.

And they put their products on display at Freshney Place shopping centre, with the hope of tempting customers.

The scheme teaches children business skills and about teamwork, under the supervision of an adviser.

Schools from Scunthorpe, Beverley and Hull took part with local contingents from Tollbar Business, Enterprise and Humanities College, were selling acrylic picture frames and name holders.

Elite Enterprise's Laura Seward (15), from New Waltham, said: "Freshney Place wants us to make them leaflet holders, so we will be looking into that, and we have also had an order for 16 name holders."

Another company from Tollbar was Pulse, which was selling cork boards made from recycled corks.

Team member Rosie Hewitt (14), of Scartho, said: "We have been asking pubs and restaurants to save corks for us to recycle."

Once the team have their corks they cut them in half and glue them together.

Rosie said the boards, edged in recycled MDF, are perfect hot plates for people to use in their kitchens.

Another Tollbar company had the backing of Mariners chairman and businessman John Fenty.

Led by 14-year-old Tom, the Mighty Magnets have set their sights on selling magnets in bulk to local companies.

Tom said the company ordered the magnets over the internet and then filled them with pictures or sayings.

He said: "We are selling them in bulk - we go to a company and see if they want to buy our magnets by sending them a sample."
