Pupils Scoop Prizes And Learn So Much

March 26th, 2008

Community-minded kids have been praised at a ceremony at Tollbar Business And Enterprise College.

Officers from Humberside Police gave prizes to the school's pupils who took part in last year's Lifestyle Project.

Each team from the school won prizes, ranging from a WH Smith voucher to a trip to Alton Towers.

Lifestyle co-ordinator Pc Kate Atkins said the scheme was a "real example of team building" for youngsters.

"They learn so much from taking part," she said.

"From a police point of view it is important because a lot of elderly people will see groups of kids as a threat, when they are the opposite.

"It is good for them to know that not all kids are bad."

One of the winners, who has booked her place on a trip to Flamingo Land, was 11-year-old Devon Young.

Devon was a member of the Cheeky Monkeys which volunteered at Scartho's St Giles' Church.

She said: "We sold cakes and quiche and we did tea stalls for the elderly people after they had been to the church.

"And then we did some car washing for people we knew and we did a raffle.

"When we had all of the money we gave it to Diabetes UK because my sister is diabetic and we all said we wanted to do it for them because they are trying to find a cure.

"I feel dead excited to be going to Flamingo Land."

Winning tickets to Alton Towers were Eve Whitehead (12) and Hannah Holden (13).

Eve, from Grimsby, said: "I am so happy because now Alton Towers is coming closer and closer."

The Tollbar teams who won £10 WH Smith vouchers were: Hospice Helpers; Bikers 07; The Pink Ladies; The Croucher Kids; Animal Lovers; Fantastic Three. Those visiting Flamingo Land are: Heaven Eleven; The Terrific Triplets; The Three Musketeers; and Cheeky Monkeys. The Cheers Girls - Charlotte Windley, Ella Hickling, Eve Whitehead, Hannah Holden and Olivia Clarke - won a day trip to Alton Towers.
