Inter-House Basketball Tournament
The Inter -House basketball Tournament has concluded with Cygnus taking the title after intense competition from the other houses, especially Perseus.
ORGANISATION AND SCORING OF THE COMPETITION
Each of years 7,8,9 and 10, had its own separate tournament arranged as follows:
The six houses were split into two groups of three, with each group playing a league. First in each group then played off for 1st and 2nd place, second in each group played off for third and forth place, and third in each group played off for fifth and sixth place. Each house was then awarded points for its finishing position accordingly, with 6 points awarded to first place and 1 point to sixth place. This organisation was duplicated over the four year groups and the points gained by each year combined to give an overall points total for each house.
The competition was laid out so that the pupils would ultimately have responsibility for organising their own teams. Initially a trial night was held for each year where captains were selected and informed about their responsibilities. The captains then had at least one week to assemble a team comprising of four to eight players.

The pleasing aspect was that all captains took on board the task of organising their team and tried their hardest to motivate and encourage their house members to join in. Special mention must also go to the Assistant Principals responsible for the six Houses, who helped the captains prepare their teams. During the tournament, most of the houses were fully represented showing a magnificent effort by all concerned.
The attitude of the participating students was outstanding. Pupils had developed their own team strategies and set plays. On the tournament nights their excitement and enthusiasm was intense , but all in good spirit. It was excellent to see pupils who had never really played the game before really trying hard for their team.
Each tournament night had its comical moments including a year ten student thinking that you had to shoot form outside the three point arc, Matthew Mitchell’s painful pass, and Josh Penney’s successful overhead shot. Most memorable moment was when a shot by one of the year 8 boys lodged between the ring and backboard, when another ball was used to free it, it amazingly fell into the basket. All agreed that the points should count!!
Highly commended are Luke Dieudonne, Dale Fowler, Rebecca Smith, David Fowler and Daniel Clarke who officiated and did a tremendous job.
The competitions have also been of benefit to the College Basketball teams, several students who had not previously attended College practice sessions have been scouted to train and play with for College teams.
Basketball is really taking off at TBEC and this competition has firmly ensured and confirmed that Basketball is now one of the most popular and most played sports at the College. After the success of this Inter-house competition, it is bound to be a very popular competition next year.
