2007 – Continuing to Achieve!

  • GCSE results - 100% Pass rate with 80% A* - C.
  • Some students continue to take GCSE a year early.
  • In Performing Arts Year 10,  75% of students gained A* - C.
  • In Performing Arts Year 9, many students gained A* - C with one student being placed in the top 5 throughout the country!
  • Many students have taken and passed with distinction, instrumental and vocal exams this year.

We are fortunate to be in a catchment area where parents encourage their children to learn a musical instrument and belong to musical organisations. This was evident when the current year 7 filled in a questionnaire on intake day and showed that 25% of the year had had the experience of playing an instrument in the Primary school. Once again, there has been an increase in the number of students deciding to continue these studies, at Tollbar.

Instrumental and vocal lessons are now delivered by highly qualified music staff at Tollbar and freelance musicians. These lessons are very well attended and timetables work on a rotational basis. Funding for new instruments has meant that students playing in the band are given the best start to their musical career with us.

The Curriculum area is staffed by highly qualified musicians who are committed to raising standards in music and providing opportunities through extra-curricular rehearsals for students to develop their musical skills and enjoy making music.

Music was observed during the recent Ofsted inspection and contributed to the OUTSTANDING report.

Students perform well independently and in ensembles, throughout the key stages. Teaching is well planned, allowing for independence of thought and leading to good achievement.
