Science
The science curriculum area of Tollbar Business, Enterprise and Humanities College is a friendly and mutually supportive team based in a specialist Science Faculty Area.
All KS4 and KS3 lessons take place in laboratories, all of which have Interactive White Board technology. There is extensive software support including electronic versions of text books, video, data logging and interactive PowerPoints. The faculty boasts a science computer suite containing 32 networked PCs. Sixth form teaching takes place in dedicated A-level laboratories most of which have Interactive White Board technology.
The faculty has been involved in the development and training of ITT students from Hull University, Leeds Metropolitan University, Edgehill University and the Open University. A number of science staff have complete the graduate teacher programme (GTP) whilst at TBEC.
Assessment Procedures
Formative assessment or assessment for learning is written into the schemes of work; novel approaches to formative assessment are always being sought and used by staff during lessons. Summative Assessment occurs by the regular tests based on KS3 and GCSE exam questions and end of year exams. Central spreadsheet records are maintained to show present levels, target grades and allows staff to keep track of student performance. Strategies are then put in place when there is evidence of underachievement.
