What is the course about?

The Course aims to cover both the current technologies and perceived advances in both hardware and software to enable candidates to meet the demands of a highly skilled, I.T. focussed business and industrial sector. It also provides a firm basis for further studies in higher education in Computing and related subject areas.

When does the course start?

The course starts in September of each year.

How do I attend?

Normal daytime attendance.

Where applicable this subject may also be taken as a part time evening programme.

AQA

How long does the course last?

Each level is taught as a one year programme.

What does this course lead on to?

You may progress to A2 level.

AS and A2 levels are recognised qualifications for a wide range of courses in Higher Education.

What subject entry requirements are there?

The entry requirement for this course is a Grade C or above in GCSE ICT

Are there any other requirements?

Computers at home are not a requirement, but it would always help the candidates if a machine was available at any time they wished to use it instead of having to come to 6th Form to use the computers.

How is the course assessed?

Unit 1 written unit 1½ hours – 35%

Unit 2 written unit 1½ hours –35%

Unit 3 written unit 1½ hours – 30%

A2 Units

Unit 4 written unit 1½ hours 15%

Unit 5 written unit 1½ hours 15%

Unit 6 Centre assessed project – 20%

Unit 1- This unit comprises short answer questions and structured questions and assesses Module 1 of the AS Subject Content. All questions are compulsory.

Unit 2– This unit comprises short answer questions and structured questions and assesses Module 2 of the AS Subject Content. All questions are compulsory.

Unit 3– This unit comprises compulsory structured questions on a Computing Practical Exercise. The Exercise set by AQA will be different each year but will always be based on the content of Modules 1,2 and 3.

Unit 4– This unit comprises short answer and structural questions and assesses Module 4 of the A2 subject content. All questions are compulsory.

Unit 5– This unit comprises of short answer and structured questions and assesses Module 5 of the A2 subject content. All questions are compulsory.

Unit 6– The Practical Project is marked in the Centre and moderated by AQA. The Project allows candidates to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of computer systems and the principles of computing, and their skills at analysing, designing, implementing, testing and evaluating systems, buy undertaking one substantial piece of work over an extended period of time. This work should complement the assessment carried out in the written unit and should be presented as a written report.

The project should support and illustrate the practical application of the principles of problem solving using computers and enable the candidate to demonstrate the techniques of system documentation and system development.

How much does the course cost?

All students who are joining a full time course and are under 19 years of age on the 1st September as their course commences, will not be required to pay tuition fees or examination fees.

Are there any exam fees?

Exam fees are not payable by 16-19 year olds sitting these units for the first time.
Mature students will be advised as to the exam fees when enrolling prior to the start of the course.
