Learning Outside the Classroom
The Curriculum Area leads the delivery of the College's Enterprise Education programme and students are encouraged to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities.
In addition, a number of staff have wide-ranging vocational experience of commerce, industry and self-employment. There are excellent examples of staff using lessons to enhance work related learning.
All Year 9 students will visit Parkway Cinema to collect evidence for their BTEC coursework (BTEC students) or to investigate the activities of a Private Limited Company (GCSE students).
In 2008-9, Tollbar students recognised as gifted in Business Studies entered the Swedish Challenge enterprise competition, coming third and winning prizes totalling £380 for themselves and the College; this followed a similar success the previous year.
Tollbar’s Year 13 Business students have won the Ogden Trust Enterprise Challenge for the last two years.
All students in Year 10 are given the opportunity to set up their own enterprise company within the College; in 2007-8, 4 companies were entered for the Young Enterprise Company Programme with the following successes;
'Mighty Magnets' won a contract to supply Grimsby Town FC club shop with souvenirs
Matthew Draycott, business advisor to 'Charming' won UK National Business Advisor of the Year
In 2008-9, seven Companies have been registered across Years 10 and 12 with support from a range of teaching staff across six Curriculum Areas and Business Advisors from eight local and national companies.
In 2009, funding was obtained to finance the College’s Dragons’ Den activity which helped Year 12 students to launch a range of social enterprise schemes.
Further funding was obtained from the 2012 London Olympic Games Organising Committee to finance a Year 6 transitional activity to be held at Tollbar in summer 2009.
