We have four full time and one part time member of staff in the Curriculum Area as well as visiting instrumental teachers.
The Music area comprises of four well equipped teaching rooms, an instrumental teaching room and a rehearsal room. We are situated next to the conference and drama halls, which allows us to do group work in performing arts.
Two of the teaching areas are equipped with a music lab system serving 16 Yamaha PSR1500 keyboards with USB and internet capability. There are also eleven networked PCs in the area, running Sibelius and other score writing packages, enabling students to record, edit and print out compositions of professional quality. The interactive whiteboards are in use during most lessons and are a fantastic resource tool, bringing the world of music into the classroom.
The third classroom houses all the percussion instruments including steel pans and a set of samba and African drums. Students are able to develop different skills and learn about different cultures whilst in this room.
The fourth classroom is a specialist room for IBD students and is situated in the sixth form area of college. It has five new Yamaha synthesizers linked to PCs running Sibelius and Pro Tools, providing industry-standard studio software.
During the last five years we have been producing regular concerts and other events involving and have expanded and upgraded our sound and lighting systems. We have also purchased a new baby grand piano and many brass and woodwind instruments.
In all the classrooms, wall space is positively used to create informative and stimulating displays that reflect modern practices, support the projects and create an expectation for achievement. Likewise, we make good use of corridor display space and have added several new displays within the last year, especially promoting Performing Arts and the International Baccalaureate.
