Hearts Beating Together

September 18th, 2009

The British Heart Foundation are a well-known charity who are not only researching the causes of heart-related diseases and looking into safer drugs, but also support and care for those already suffering from heart conditions. For this event, the British Heart Foundation were hoping to raise at least £1,500. So, needless to say, when given the chance to volunteer at the sponsored walk held on Sunday the 6th, 19 Tollbar sixth form students jumped at the chance to do something to help the cause.

The event itself lasted two hours, between 11:00am and 1:00pm, and a large number of people (54 in fact!) took part in the walk, including two local race walkers. Two members of the sixth form, Marley Fancourt and Marc Bruford (year 12), raised a total of £69.51 through their main beach bucket! That's a massive £57.69 spent on funding further research and care for heart patients, and another £11.82 on making sure more events like this one can happen.

Marley commented, "I didn't know we'd raised so much, that's great! It feels fantastic to know that what we did could really help people that are in need, and I would gladly do it again."

Marc was quick to add, "People were happy to donate because they knew it was for a good cause." The total amount raised from the collection buckets which Tollbar students held was £101.02.

The British Heart Foundation were extremely thankful for Tollbar's input into the event, and would love both students and their families to support next year's walk, on Sunday September the 12th. But that's not all. The British Heart Foundation is open all year round and we students need to get thinking of ways we can raise funds for the Red for Heart campaign (national Wear Red Day is Friday 26th February 2010). Happy planning!

Tara Emery,
Year 12.
