Top Tory Praises College's Quality Achievements

October 7th, 2009

Tollbar business and Enterprise College was singled out as a model for learning by a senior Conservative politician.

John Hayes MP, Shadow Cabinet Minister responsible for Further and Higher Education said a future Conservative Government would love to export its success across the country.

Mr Hayes, urged to visit the school by local Tory party officials, praised its "leadership, ethos and purpose."

He said: "I wanted to come here to learn about what this school is doing and how it is doing it, because its results are quite exceptional."

During a discussion with school principal David Hampson OBE, Mr Hayes heard how Tollbar cultivated an ethos of "strong discipline and high expectations" among students, staff and governors.

He also heard Tollbar, which replaced A-Levels with the International Baccalaureate at its Sixth Form College last year, is now the UK’s second largest IB provider.

Accompanying the Minister were Cllr Martin Vickers and Victoria Ayling, prospective Conservative Parliamentary candidates for Cleethorpes and Grimsby, respectively.

Tollbar chairman of governors, Philip Bond, praised Mr Hampson's leadership, adding he felt Tollbar did not get enough national recognition for its achievements.

"We do seem to be out on a limb here and it is a real shame because Tollbar has so much good practice to share with other schools," he said.

Mr Hays concluded: "This school is extremely successful in terms of value added."

"It proves that when a school is determined and focused, well-led and purposeful, immense strides can be made."
