Students Ready For Olympics

October 15th, 2009

Tollbar Business Enterprise and Humanities College has become part of an education programme for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It was one of five schools in the country to receive £5,000 of Get Set funding for a pilot scheme, set up to help create a vibrant, inspirational network of schools and colleges and other learning providers.

The scheme involved Year 6 pupils from feeder primary schools who were paying their first visit to Tollbar before joining in Year 7.

Instead of their usual induction day, they were involved in an enterprise project, to design a logo and stadium for the Olympic Games.

Tollbar head of business and enterprise, Vince Groak, and assistant curriculum leader for enterprise, Gemma Hirst, said the pupils had thrown themselves into the project.

"This was a very different induction day for the pupils, who were visiting us for the first time, and now that they have joined us in Year Seven they have been able to celebrate receiving the plaque with us," said Mr Groak.

"As members of Get Set we will now be able to share in some of the advantages of London 2012 with visits from top athletes to Tollbar, and also the opportunity to visit the new Olympic village on completion."
