Following the Year 7 tea party, with its guests from the students' former schools, it was the turn of the grandparents of Year 7s to visit Tollbar.
Over three afternoons, around 150 took up the invitation to tour the college, talk to teachers and generally acquaint themselves with the school that is now educating their grandchildren.
Jack and Fran Challen said that granddaughter Amelia was still "on a buzz" about attending Tollbar. Neither had visited before, though as a college lecturer, Mr Challen was involved in education. They had toured the Library, the Gym, Science and Technology classrooms and Textiles.
"It gives you an association with the school," Mr Challen said. "When Amelia tells us what she's been doing, we will know the place and possibly the teacher." Sam Smith had all four grandparents there - Susan and Michael Smith and Theodora and Graham Plant.
"Grandparents' day is a very good idea and we're very impressed," Mrs Smith said. "Tollbar seems to have all the facilities and the class sizes are smaller than we thought. Teachers seem to give time to every child."
The foursome had been to classes in Science, Textiles, History, PE and Art and had also visited the library.
"We were impressed with how up to date teaching is in the classroom," Mr Plant said. “We were looking for the blackboards and chalk! It's also very nice to see all the children in uniform.
"Sam was a bit apprehensive about coming here but he's really enjoying it here. He seemed to grow up overnight and I think it's down to the staff that he has settled in so well. Tollbar has the right atmosphere and we've enjoyed visiting."
Tea and cakes were served to grandparents in the Avro Suite after their tour - and there were drinks and biscuits for any grandchildren who wished to come along and collect their special visitors at the end of the day.
