YOUNG local masterminds were put to the test during an annual super quiz at Grimsby's Hereford Technology School.
The Grimsby and District Quiz Leagues Secondary School Quiz saw 22 teams go head to head for a £100 cheque and a handful of trophies.
Teams were split into under-13s and under-15s, and the main trophy, awarded for the highest scores combined, was given to the Tollbar Business and Enterprise College, which also took first place for the under-15s category.
Tollbar pupil Kieran North, 15, of Scartho, said it was "great" to win.
"The current affairs and Government questions were hard, but I did well on sport and music," he said.
"We won the year before last and it's great to do it again."
Ashlie Blakey, 14, of Grimsby, said she had been reading newspapers and watching the news a lot in preparation for the big event.
"I'd love to go on a TV quiz show one day and I've learned a lot," she said.
Ben Robinson, 11, of Grimsby, said sports was his strong point and he was surprised their teams won the overall trophy.
"It's really great to be the winners and I would like to go on Mastermind one day. It would be awesome," he added.
Topics covered in the event included facts and figures, sport and hot off the press, and when all the scores were counted and verified, Tony Hunter, chief executive of North east Lincolnshire Council, distributed the awards.
Malcolm Towle, chairman of the Grimsby and District Quiz Leagues, said: "We've held this event for more than 10 years, but the leagues have been running since 1975."
"The council gave us £300 towards the quiz and it is also sponsored by Wilkin Chapman Solicitors."
"The day definitely stretches the minds of the gifted and talented and the children have done really well."
"It is never the same schools winning each year, so everyone gets a bite of the cherry."
Scores were counted by the quiz leagues' committee and Andrew Hunter, 57, of Laceby, who has been on numerous TV quiz shows, including Mastermind and Battle Of The Brains, said the competition is "always interesting."
