Students at Tollbar Business, Enterprise & Humanities College have been learning more about the dangers of revealing too many personal details online and on social networking sites, in a project which forms part of European E- Safety Awareness Week.
e-Safety is an issue that is taught throughout college, including tutor periods, but during e-safety week some students were still surprised to discover what can happen if they give away too many details online.
Topics included the dangers of posting private details on social networking sites and giving away too much private information in mobile phone texts.
To ensure that students take the best precautions online, staff at Tollbar presented movie clip resources and visual displays to show the possible consequences of putting home addresses online, using mobile phones to record footage and chatting to people on-line you do not know.
Although the college has a strict no mobile phones policy, the importance of secure texting and the consequences of filming incidents on your mobile phone outside of school were also discussed.
Students have been taught how to set up social networking accounts safely and were urged to take greater care in the future.
Computers and the internet play a major role in school life. Students are aware of the possible dangers if they do not use the internet and their mobile phones safely, both in and out of school. E-Safety Awareness Week gave the College an extra opportunity to drive home the message that all students need to think about their safety when using computers, mobile phones and the internet.
