March 10th, 2010

Youngsters at Tollbar Business and Enterprise College took part in an international challenge as part of World Maths Day.

By taking on other schools over the internet in a variety of live mental arithmetic games, they were able to compete to be world champions and claim coveted gold medals.

Maths teacher Steven Batts said: "The slogan of World Maths Day is Uniting The World in Numbers, and I think that's exactly what it does do."

"It creates some really healthy competition, not just between friends, but also students in different countries, because everyone wants to see their names up on the leader board."

Leueen Burns (13) said: "Maths is not my favourite subject but this challenge is really fun, and we all like to see who is doing the best."
