Pupils Create Global Links As Standards Are Raised

March 18th, 2010

Teachers at a specialist business college have been praised for helping to raise standards in the classroom.

Education chiefs at Tollbar Business and Enterprise College are reaping the rewards after taking the unusual step of employing a team of Ofsted inspectors to carry out a thorough examination.

The results of the inspection revealed 25 per cent of lessons are now considered outstanding with one inspector declaring that the standard of teaching in some lessons was "the best he had ever seen".

Derek Kennard, the college's director of teaching and learning, said: "At first, when we applied the new Ofsted standards we found our grades took a slight dip."

“However, they have risen and the most recent reports for teaching in maths, science and English prove we are nearer to lessons that are consistently challenging, very well-managed and where student progress is maximised."

Next on the agenda for the high performing Station Road college is a bid to become an International school.

To celebrate the school's global links, from Sweden to Canada, and to mark Fairtrade Fortnight, year nine students were asked to create Fairtrade products which will become part of a display.
