James Gets His Global Warning Message Across To Contest Judge

April 1st, 2010

Pupil James Gordon (12) of Tollbar Business and Enterprise College, has won his age category, and also the overall 11 to 13 age group in the Global Canvas Art Competition, organised by the David Shepherd Foundation.

Having taken the top spot, his reward is to paint with the acclaimed wildlife artist.

James was presented with his prize at a special exhibition to be held at the Natural History Museum in London, and was joined by seven other art students from Tollbar BEC, whose work was also considered good enough to be exhibited at the museum for the day.

They were Megan Dunne, Natasha Ramsden, Emily Todd, Fushia Clayton, Lewis Loft, Lauren Sykes-Drinkell and Abigail Jackson.

The theme of the competition was global warning.

Art teacher Tony Davis, who entered the students' work for the competition, said the subject matter proved to be something they were very passionate about.

He said: "It was a really tough challenge and I am so proud of them. We sent 15 pieces of work in for the competition and eight of them have been rewarded in one way or another, so we are very happy."

"James, in particular, has done remarkably well to win these categories, and he will really enjoy spending the day with an international artist."

James, whose mum Angela is also an artist, said: "I never thought I would win. It was great to enter and I chose the theme of alternative energy."

"I really want to be an architect, but I can't wait to meet David Shepherd."
