Teachers Relishing Learning Process

Sixteen newly-qualified teachers are celebrating making the grade at Tollbar Business and Enterprise College.

The teachers were presented with their General Teaching Council Certificates for Induction by the college's principal, David Hampson.

Maths teacher Steven Batts was the youngest member of staff at Tollbar when he qualified when he was 22. He attended Whitgift School and the University of Hull before joining Tollbar.

"Tollbar BEC was my first placement school on my PGCE course and I was coached by Mr Warnock, who gave me a huge amount of support and was a true inspiration during my training year as an initial teacher trainee," he said.

"During my NQT year I was never short of advice, guidance and support at Tollbar. The outstanding quality of teaching that the maths department provides, alongside the college as a whole, has really driven me to be the best educator I can be.

"I feel as though I am constantly learning from others, whilst also reflecting on how I can progress and improve professionally."

Music teacher Vicki Crossley studied at Manchester before gaining a job at Tollbar BEC.

She said: "During my NQT year I was given many exciting opportunities, including teaching performing arts for the first time and teaching a whole class to play the trumpet at a local primary school."

"This has made my first year at Tollbar BEC very exciting indeed."

Derek Kennard, director of teaching and learning at Tollbar BEC and its induction tutor, said: "Some of the NQT's began their association with the college even before they trained as teachers."

"Since their training, every one of them has shown a real commitment to the life and work of the college and we wish them well in their careers."
