Young Artist James Will Brush Up On His Skills With A Master Painter

May 11th, 2010

A Tollbar student will be brushing up on his art skills when he is taught by famous wildlife artist David Shepherd after becoming champion in a global contest.

James Gordon, 12, will visit Mr Shepherd's studio for the masterclass in June after he was picked as the winner in his age category at the 2010 Global Canvas Art Competition.

His creative piece will now be exhibited alongside other entries in the National History Museum this spring.

James's work - which was created with the theme global warning in mind - impressed Mr Shepherd, who judged the contest organised by his charity the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.

James said: "I was really shocked when I won; it's a real honour."

"I created the acrylic picture to show the two sides of global warming and to prompt a choice of possible futures."

"I'm going to have a one-on-one art class with David, and tea, so it will be a great experience."

"I have loved art since primary school and to win this competition is great."

Mr Shepherd said: "I am continually bowled over by children's creativity and enthusiasm for the competition."

"It's wonderful to know that this bright, young generation understands the issues that will shape all our futures and can translate them into fabulous works of art."

"As ever, I thoroughly enjoyed judging the entries and meeting the children at the National History Museum. They were all inspiring."

Heather Boothroyd, vice principal at Tollbar said: "We are extremely proud of James and it will be an amazing experience for him - he's done very well."

The 2011 competition will be themed Tomorrow's World and is open to children up to the age of 16.

Entries can be in the form of either an art piece or a poem. More details of the event are available at www.davidshepherd.org
