Star Chamber Takes A Bow

June 25th, 2010

Talented young violinists from Tollbar Business and Enterprise College earned a mark of distinction after an accomplished performance at the Cleethorpes Festival of Music and Words.

The Tollbar Chamber Strings picked up the Oxford Shield in the string ensembles open section at the Memorial Hall.

The group, which comprised eight students aged between 12 and 16, played classic pieces such as Making Whoopie, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and La Cumparsita.

Their performance earned fulsome praise from adjudicator Marilynne Davies, who told them: "That was very nice indeed. You play so well together and your bowing is unfailingly unanimous."

"There was so much in-tune playing, I enjoyed that enormously."

Music teacher Francesca White, who accompanied the group on piano, was delighted with the performance.

She said: "I only took on the Chamber Strings in September, so they've only been together for about 30 weeks. In that time they have played three concerts so they have done really well."

"The abilities of the children range from grade three to seven. They played very well today and I’m very proud of them."

Jamie Baird, 15, has been playing the violin for about seven years and has performed at the festival before, albeit not in a group.

He said: "It was really good to get a sense of togetherness. I really enjoyed it."

Georgia Ellis, 12, also has previous festival experience, having performed with her primary school orchestra.

She said: "I like playing the songs with my group. It's fun. I feel proud because we have worked hard for this."
