A local college is putting spirit back into school sports as its cheerleading teams are fast becoming more popular.
Tollbar Business and Enterprise College had the activity as part of its year 10 curriculum in 2007/08 and now offers a cheerleading club every Thursday after school.
Claire Smith, who joined Tollbar last year and taught the class, said: "We decided to offer it after school and the first week, 56 girls turned up."
In all, 80 girls now practice the art - a combination of dance and gymnastics - and they aim to perform at college football and basketball fixtures.
"It's quite hard work," said Claire. "We do pyramids and lifts and I'm going on a course to teach 'basket catching' where one of the girls is turned over in the air and caught."
There are more than 11,000 cheerleaders in Britain with numbers increasing daily.
The UK Cheerleading Association puts teams forward to the European Cheerleading Championships and the world championships.
Unfortunately, the team is a little gender-biased.
Claire said: "At the moment it's all girls and we would really like some boys but it?s proving difficult to get them interested.
