Generous Tollbar Breaks Its Own Record In Giving

January 6th, 2009

Tollbar BEC students smashed their previous record when they put together an amazing 1,316 gift-filled shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.

Collecting the boxes, which go to children in need around the world, were area co-ordinator Pamela Hodge and her assistant Jennifer Mawer.

"This is an incredible total, particularly from a secondary school," Mrs Hodge said. "It's amazing how the students respond."

Among the Tollbar students enthusiastically helping to load their gifts was Shannon Dixon who, with the help of her grandmother, packed 26 shoeboxes.

But eclipsing everyone was Joel Gibbs whose family's all year round effort produced 64 boxes.

The New Waltham college also presented the charity with a cheque for more than £2,000 from donations and an on-line collection.

Assistant Principal David Mitchell, said: "It has been another truly phenomenal effort this year.

"Students, parents, relatives, friends and staff of TBEC have for the third year running, gone the extra mile to make it a very memorable Christmas for well over 1,000 less fortunate children.

"This year's total of 1,316 was the highest number we have ever collected, and that includes two years ago when we amassed more than any other secondary school in England.

"If it is estimated that each box costs £10 to fill - and costs more than double that - plus the money donated for the administration of the boxes, this represents in the region of a £15,000 donation to charitable causes.

"When one considers that we are in a credit crunch this result is even more pleasing."
