Honour For Tollbar Head

March 13th, 2009

David Hampson, principal of Tollbar Business and Enterprise College, was yesterday invited to the palace to collect his OBE.

As reported, Mr Hampson (58) was named in the Queen's New Year's Honour List for services to education.

After receiving his award from Princess Anne, Mr Hampson said: "It was a surreal occasion and a fantastic honour."

He said: "I cannot really describe what a wonderful occasion it was to be there with people from so many different walks of life.

"To be recognised for something that is so important to me, which is improving the quality of education for young people, is simply tremendous."

Mr Hampson has been principal of Tollbar for 19 years, and in that time has helped turn it into one of the highest-performing schools, earning a place among the top 13 schools in the country.

In 2008, Ofsted inspectors awarded Tollbar an "outstanding" report and students achieved the best ever GCSE and A-level performances in the school's history.

Last month the school became the region's only SSAT teacher training centre, which will enable Mr Hampson and his colleagues to pass on their experience to new and existing teachers throughout the region.

Mr Hampson said: "Tollbar is now a great school, and today's recognition is for everyone there who has helped to make it so. I accept this with a very big thank you to all of them."
