Year 7 and 8 Tollbar students had a taste of life in the media when they took part in BBC School Report, an annual project that gives 11-14 year-old students the chance to make their own news reports for a real audience.
Under the guidance of Mr Newton and Mrs Berry, 20 students prepared newspaper reports and a radio bulletin on a variety of national topics ranging from sport to politics and local news and "vox pops" from other Tollbar students.
Tollbar was one of only 11 schools from the whole of Lincolnshire who joined others from all over the country to simultaneously create news reports.
Current TV programmes such as The Apprentice and Dancing on Ice were covered by the Tollbar journalists who had to meet a tight deadline for posting their news and stories on the Tollbar website which would then link through to the BBC.
Mr Newton explained that as well as making the news on the BBC site, the students were this year producing their own newspaper featuring their reports.
"They have a 2pm deadline for the BBC news to be on the site," he said. "Students were appointed as editors for the various departments, such as environment, sport, and entertainment, just like on newspapers.
"They were told by the BBC what topics they couldn't cover but apart from that it was their choice and we had an editorial meeting to go through the newspapers and decide on our stories.
"Last year it was just Year 7's but this year it’'s bigger and better, we have a video and recording equipment and our own title music."
Mrs Berry praised the enthusiasm of the students.
"We wondered if it would be difficult having students from two years, but they just gelled," she said. "Some of the Year 8's had done School Report last year and the Year 7's learned from them.
"We have been talking to the students about this since Christmas and we had a lot who were very keen to take part."
Although Tollbar's contributions weren’t chosen for the main headline reports that featured on the BBC website, all the students learned a great deal about reporting - and meeting those all-important deadlines.
