Watch Out Simon - Tollbar's Got Talent Too!

May 6th, 2009

They may all be more than 30 years younger than TV sensation Susan Boyle but there's no doubt there are more than a few Britain's Got Talent contenders at Tollbar. The fact that Tollbar's Got Talent was amply demonstrated at the annual talent contest - and this year it really was a case of saving the best 'til last.

However, the eventual winner almost didn't make it through her performance. Brogen Blakey was the final contestant of 17, singing White Horse, but as she launched into her song, the microphone failed and, rather upset, she left the stage. She tried again, but again had to go off.

Finally, the problems were sorted out and she gave such an engaging performance that she was voted winner of the Tollbar Talent Trophy and the prize of tickets to Pleasure Island.

The last line of her song "Try and catch me now" proved very prophetic as she narrowly beat violinist Bryony Webb and fellow singer Becky Bennett, who also gave a charismatic rendering of her chosen song, Take a Bow.

Rather than playing the kind of classical piece normally expected on the violin, Bryony gave a very impressive performance of the rock anthem Supermassive Black Hole by Muse, to a backcloth of a video she had prepared herself.

Becky and Bryony were placed equal second in a very close-run contest and each won tickets for the Parkway Cinema in Cleethorpes.

Supporting these top three artists were various other singers and dancers, two bands - and a cheeky comedy act from Andrew Crowley who had the audience laughing with his impressions and jokes.

Both bands, Stranded and Supernova, featured very accomplished guitarists and drummers and brought the watching students to their feet, clapping and waving.

Also giving a polished performance were the Gaming Girls who gave a very assured singing and dancing interpretation of Poker Face.

Being first on stage is no easy task but Megan Holdsworth got the show off to a good start with her rendition of My Heart Will Go On while Jake Browne was the only male solo instrumental player with his well-played piano solo.

Year 11 students Victoria Stubbs and Nadia Butt were the comperes - both are becoming very well-known in this role in various events at Tollbar - while Mr Leeman was in charge of the sound system.

While judges Mr Moon, Mrs Hornby, Mr Kennard and Year 11 student Ismail Shtewi were deliberating, the audience were treated to three numbers from Tollbar's Sixth Form boy band Viladoors, who are rapidly gaining an excellent reputation locally.

Victoria and Nadia thanked all the parents, staff and students who had attended the show, Miss Burns and Miss Crossley for the organisation, Mr Leeman and all the helpers behind the scenes, the judges and all the students who took part.
