Education For All

May 22nd, 2009

Eight adult learners have gained a total of 18 certificates in Literacy and Numeracy through the Adult Learning programme at Tollbar BEC.

Part of Lifelong Learning, which enables students to work at their own pace, the courses started in May last year. Places are limited to 12 and courses are open to the community and to CSA staff.

"By learning at their own pace, students can achieve exam success then move on to higher levels," explained John Teanby, who is Tollbar's Adult Learning organiser. "The majority of those attending are parents who often come to help their own careers and to be able to help their families with homework."

Many of the students who have benefited from Adult Learning at Tollbar say it has boosted their confidence, with a number commenting that it has enabled them to help with maths homework.

One said: "Mr Teanby is very patient with us all, I have learned so much, it has helped me with my job and I have really enjoyed it."

Other comments included:

  • "The teacher is good at breaking down tasks to make things understandable. I have not felt that I held anyone back despite thinking I was weaker. The group has a nice atmosphere and everyone supports each other. I felt very proud to collect my certificate and look forward to more."

  • "I think the course is helping me spend more time learning. I enjoy it and it helps me to help my children with their assignments. I fully appreciated the idea of parents learning and thank you for the opportunity."

  • "I have found both subjects very good, thanks to the teacher and the way he puts things to me. I left school in 1974 with no GCSEs and this is the first time I have been on a computer in my life and only the second time I've done any courses."

  • "It is amazing how much I have forgotten since leaving school, so being able to refresh my English and maths has been a great help, also being able to use a computer as I was not up to scratch on this."

  • "The course has helped in many ways in my personal and working life and is to be included in my NVQ coursework. Also I have made many new friends."

Places are now available for an immediate start on the Adult Learning courses.
