Boys Should Be Proud

June 2nd, 2009

Four Tollbar students competed in the National School's Badminton Championship Finals at Center Parcs, Sherwood Forest.

Nathaniel Hallam, Liam Fletcher, Tom Machon and Chris Hill, representing the college at Key Stage 3 level, had won their way through county and regional rounds to reach this national stage.

The Tollbar Business and Enterprise College team, three of whom play for the county, made it into the final, which involved just nine teams.

Having come second in their league, the four students went on to achieve sixth overall, beating off opposition from large city schools.

The school's championship attracted entries from more than 1,000 schools, with participants totalling 15,000 and sport teacher Dan Coulling, in charge of the Tollbar team, was proud of their achievements.

"They started playing in November in the local rounds of the competition," he explained.

“They won the local rounds south of Humber, then the Yorkshire round so they are Yorkshire badminton champions as well as being sixth best in the country."

"It's the first time we've entered the national championships and all the Tollbar teams won through the South Humber stage so we're looking forward to next year."

The finals at Center Parcs brought together 164 students from 36 schools and the Tollbar team's matches were watched by Team England player

Anthony Clark.
