Course Shows Students That Sport Is For All

Tollbar Academy students have been getting to grips with wheelchair basketball as part of a new initiative aiming at broadening their horizons.

The pupils, who are all studying towards either GCSE or BTEC physical education, had the opportunity to take part in two new activities as part of the programme, for which North East Lincolnshire council provides the instructors and equipment.

The youngsters also tried their hand at a modified form of curling during the scheme, with plans to roll it out across the whole school.

Curriculum leader for PE Paul Donnelly said: "It's a practical element for the pupils which enables them to understand how having a disability doesn't hold people back from playing sport.

"They seem to be enjoying it as it's something new that they have to learn to adapt to and their motivation has been good.

"It's definitely something we'll look to do in the future on a larger scale - this is more of just a taster to give a few pupils the chance to experience it."
