Orion

House Colour: Fantail Orange

Named after the Constellation of Orion

Perhaps second only to the Big Dipper in Ursa Major, the constellation of Orion is one of the most recognizable patterns of stars in the northern sky. Orion, the hunter, stands by the river Eridanus and is accompanied by his faithful dogs. Orion's tragic life ended when he stepped on Scorpius, the scorpion. The gods felt sorry for him, so they put him and his dogs in the sky as constellations. They also put all of the animals he hunted up there near him. Scorpius, however, was placed on the opposite side of the sky so Orion would never be hurt by it again.

Orion House has enjoyed considerable success in recent years, most notably winning the Overall Champions trophy for the 2005-6 College year.

This success continued into the new College year, with the inter-House charity shield competition, held during November and December.  The purpose of the competition was to collect shoe boxes on behalf of The Samaritan’s Purse ‘Operation Christmas Child Appeal’; the students (and often their parents!) filled each box with a variety of toys and gifts for children living in Serbia and Belarus.

Orion contributed a massive 295 boxes to the overall college total of 1126.  This was a full 91 boxes more than the next best House and led to Orion being awarded the inter-House charity shield.  Of particular note were the contributions of Orion 2 and Orion 5 and Orion 12, who amassed a staggering 67, 87 and 39 boxes respectively.

The charity theme has continued throughout the year, with various events being organised by the tutor groups, including a guess the number of buttons in the jar raffle organised by Orion 12, which raised £53.  Orion House also took part in the ‘Tollbar Crossbar Challenge’, which saw students attempting to hit the crossbar with a football from the edge of the box – and amazingly a dozen students achieved this difficult feat.  We hasten to add that none of the teachers who tried their luck at the challenge managed to get anywhere near the bar! The eventual winner was Oliver Fytche (LY5), pictured here receiving a Nike leather football as first prize from Mr Moore, Assistant Principal.

This event raised £50 in total, and was enjoyed by all who participated or indeed watched from the sidelines.  All monies received from the events will be passed onto our two nominated charities, the Blue Cross and St Andrew’s Hospice

Orion House enjoyed considerable success in the music competition, held in October.  Twenty-two tutees amassed five first-places across the different categories.  This trophy has now been held for two years running, and Mr Moore, Orion’s Head of House, is hoping to make it a hat trick in the new College year!

Orion House also managed to win the ICT trophy, a new competition for the 2006-7 College year, and one that was aimed at the year 7 and 8 students, all of whom relished the challenge.

The Endeavour Award 2006-7
Each year one student from each House receives ‘The Endeavour Award’, in recognition of their outstanding contribution to TBEC during the College year.  After much deliberation, the Orion award for 2006-7 went to Bethany Hudson (OR8) who is pictured here receiving her shield from Mr Moore, Assistant Principal for Orion House.
