Contribution to Moving Towards the College Vision

The English Curriculum Area has an important role to play in the College by ensuring that all students are equipped with the communication skills necessary to succeed in the business world. We will focus on improving students’ ability to express their ideas clearly, coherently and confidently in both speaking and writing.

Tollbar BEC English Department

Through drama and role-play we are able to improve students’ confidence and creativity in problem solving. We have included in the English Schemes of Work the opportunity to consider the social and ethical dimensions of business and enterprise. Schemes of work have been adapted to encourage the greater use of ICT and we have access to a fully-equipped ICT room to deliver lessons to this end.

At both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 we examine the ways in which language can be manipulated to sell an idea or product, and students are given extensive practice in using language to persuade. Advertising and the study of media language and images are focused on in Key Stage 3 Schemes of Work. The use of film as a marketing and business medium, and the study of specific media texts are included in the Key Stage 4 Programme of Study and the final GCSE English examination.
