The English Curriculum Area has a varied programme of Theatre visits. The Year 9 theatre/workshop activities focus on the Shakespeare play being studied for the National Curriculum tests with the involvement of companies such as ‘Bitesize’ or ‘Average Cats’.
In Year 11 many students take part in ‘Poetry Alive!’ to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the poems studied at GCSE level. Students are encouraged to participate in various Creative Writing and Poetry competitions such as the ‘Write On!’ creative challenge and our own TBEC House-based competition on ‘Thought for the Day’. ‘Newsday’ is an annual event where students work together to write all the articles for a newspaper in just one school day. This year some Key Stage 3 classes are shadowing the Carnegie Award as part of the study of contemporary Literature.
A Key Stage 3 Drama Club takes place weekly, involving a large number of students who, in December 2005, prepared a dramatic performance of ‘The Demon Headmaster’ to one of our Primary Feeder Schools. More dramatic productions of this nature are planned for 2007 onwards.
