Key Stage 4


The following courses are offered at KS4:

Geography: OCR Syllabus A

This course follows the study of 4 components. People and the Physical World covers plate tectonics, rivers and coasts. People and Places to Live covers population and settlement. People and their needs covers the quality of life, economic activities and energy. People and the environment covers local environments and the global environment. Assessment is at two levels of entry: Foundation and Higher. At Foundation Level (papers 1 & 3) the grades available are C to G and at Higher level (papers 2 & 4) the grades available are A* to D. There are 2 exams, one lasting 2 hours and the other lasting 1 hour. During the course there are two field trips. One trip to Lincoln leads to one piece of coursework. This will involve collecting information through fieldwork. Your enquiry will be 2500-3000 words in length and must use ICT at appropriate points. The other trip takes in the Holderness Coast with visits to Flamborough Head and Mappleton.

History: OCR Modern World History

This involves the study of Twentieth Century history. It includes topics such as International Relations between 1918 and 1939, a British Depth Study based on the period 1906 – 1918, International Relations between 1945 and 1989 and a Depth Study on Germany 1918 – 1945. Coursework involves a study of the USA during Prohibition and The New Deal eras.

Results at Key Stage 4 have been very good.

Religious Education

In 2006, the Year 10 Short Course gained 88% A* - C grades.

All students are expected to take an exam in RE. There are currently two courses on offer:
  • WJEC Specification A
  • WJEC Specification B
RE: WJEC Specification A 
Specification A focuses on Christianity and includes a piece of coursework.
 
The specification covers:
  • Worship– this includes why people go to church, what is in a church and how people prayer.
  • Celebration– this units looks at birth, initiation, marriage and death.
  • Authority– this unit looks at what Christians think about the Bible.
  • Beliefs– this unit looks at Christian beliefs about, God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and what happens when we die.
  • Community– this unit looks at priests, vicars and other members of the church as well as how the church works with the community.
  • Morality– this unit looks at Christian attitudes towards the family, marriage, divorce, poverty and prejudice and discrimination.
  • Lifestyle and Social Practices– this unit will look at why Christians go to church on Sundays, the work of the NCH Action for Children, the work of the Salvation Army, the work of Christian Aid and Tearfund.
RE: WJEC Specification B
In this specification, there is no coursework. The course is begun during Year 9 and is taught throughout Year 10 and 11. The students receive one lesson a week.
 
  1. Believing and Experiencing– Religious Expression, Religion and Conflict, Authority- Religion and the State, Religion and Medical Issues and Evil and Suffering.
  2. Believing and Living– Relationships, Is it Fair? Looking for meaning, Identity and Belonging and Our World.
