Assessment

In KS3 assessment is based on Quality Marks. Work is marked according to College policy and moderated by the SENCO. Students’ work is graded out of 20 and linked to NC levels. Both marks, levels and a target for improvement are recorded into student planners and centrally recorded on the College’s assessment database.
Quality Marks are undertaken once per term. The Curriculum Area uses divisions of NC levels to ensure all students can see progress in ‘small steps’ towards moving up a level in the NC.
Exercise books and homework are marked according to the College marking policy.
Monitoring
All staff within the Curriculum Area are monitored by the SENCO once per term. This is a positive, supportive system which ensures that good practice is shared, new members of staff are quickly aware of the College’s high expectations and a climate of continual improvement is engendered in all staff.
Behaviour – Rewards and Sanctions
As a Curriculum Area we like to reward progress and therefore follow College guidelines in rewarding and celebrating achievement. We offer a detailed system of rewards and sanctions for students with behavioural concerns including individual support to address these concerns. As noted by OFSTED (March 2004),
“Students’ behaviour is good in response to the College’s high expectations for their conduct.”
