Key Stage 3 (Years 7 & 8)

Tollbar BEC Maths Room

At KS3 all students follow the National KS3 Strategy in Mathematics, studying topics on Using and Applying Mathematics, Number and Algebra, Shape and Space, and Data Handling.

Students’ progress is assessed regularly using both internal and NFER tests, and the QCA Progress Tests in Years 7 and 8.

Students are encouraged to broaden their experience of Mathematics by entering for Lindsay Oil Refinery Maths Challenge,  The United Kingdom Mathematics Challenge, The Edgehill Challenge and The Jaguar Cars Maths Challenge.

In Year 9 all students sit the KS3 SAT examinations at a level appropriate to their ability. Our results in 2007 were above the National Average. 86.5% achieved level 5 or better, 62.6% achieved level 6 or better and 33.1% achieved level 7 or better.

Successes include winning the 20th Annual Maths Challenge at Lindsey Oil Refinery in 2007, one student in the top 100 candidates nationally in the senior UKMT, 3 Grey Kangaroo qualifiers and 2 Pink Kangaroo qualifiers in the Intermediate UKMT, through to the semi-finals of the Jaguar Cars Challenge as the LEA winners and 4 teams through to the next round of the Edgeshill challenge.
