Activities Beyond Taught Programmes

These take place between 3.15 and 4.15 each day, with the exception of Tollbar Band which rehearses on a Saturday morning.

Monday - String Ensemble - Mrs. Maxson

This group is open to any student playing an orchestral string instrument – Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass. In return for good attendance and participation in concerts, the college subsidises the lesson fees. Students receiving private lessons are also very welcome to join.

In Concert
On Tour in Primary Schools

Wednesday - Choir - Mrs. Hadley

Entry to the choir is by audition. Students can audition for a place at any time during the year. Regular performances are given at such events as Presentation evening, Christmas concert, Carol service, the summer concert and the secondary schools singing festival, held in February each year.

Two members of the choir have recently been successful in gaining a place in the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. These places are competitively sought after so we are very proud to have two girls in it.

Saturday 10–11am - Tollbar Band - Miss Boothroyd

All students playing a woodwind or brass instrument are able to belong to this band. Lessons are provided in college by freelance tutors employed by Tollbar. Again, these lessons are subsidised to recognise the commitment made by students in attending regularly and participating in concerts. Also in the band are two places for guitarists and four percussionists. Many of the instruments freely loaned to students, have been purchased during the last three years. The band perform in the Christmas and summer concerts, Presentation evening and undertake a two day tour around the primary schools, during the summer term.

Presentation Evening - Town Hall, Grimsby

Thursday - Steel Pan Band - Miss Smyth

This band has recently re-formed, following a series of lessons on Caribbean music, which ignited the enthusiasm of many students in year 7. New members are always welcome and no experience is necessary. All they need is to have a good sense of rhythm, enthusiasm and a good memory.

Tuesday / Wednesday - Theory Lessons - Miss Boothroyd

A session is run after college on each of these days for students to work on their theoretical knowledge, in preparation for Associated Board exams.

Associated Board Practical Exams

On Saturday 19th April, Tollbar became a centre for the Associated Board examinations. This is the second year we have run this and it was very successful. Parents and students felt it was less stressful as they did not have to worry about leaving lessons and travelling into the Grimsby centre. Being able to take the exam in a familiar environment was much more settling.

We also entered students in London College Exams during Easter. All students achieved Distinctions.

We will be running a centre for Associated Board exams again in the April 2009 session, on a Saturday. Apart from our own students, we will happily welcome entrants from outside the college.
