Students during Key Stage 4 cover complex and demanding activities applying their knowledge of skills.
The activities are mainly focused on competing or performing, promoting health and well being, or developing personal fitness.
They also develop roles in coaching, choreography, leading and officiating.
They are encouraged to get involved in exercises and activities that they can take out of school and in later life.
GCSE
This course is offered to all students.

The full range of grades A* to G are available to all students.
The course outline is as follows:-
Practical - 60% 50% - 4 practical activities and the theory of the practicals
10% - designing a personal exercise programme
Theory - 40% terminal examination paper of 2 hours
Course Structure
The students will receive 5 lessons of GCSE PE per week, these are made up as follows:-

Practical Element
i) The four practical activities (50%)
Each student follows a practical course in any 4 of the sports outlined below,
Football, Netball, Basketball, Hockey, Rounders, Tennis, Badminton, Gymnastics, Rugby,
Athletics, Dance
NB if there is a sport/activity that is not included such as swimming, (for the full range of activities please see Mr. Birtwhistle) that the student takes part in out of college then they will be able to be assessed in it and it will count towards there final grade.

Each sport is assessed in the following areas:
1 Individual and group skills (practical) (20 marks)
2 Application of skills in an activity situation (practical) (40 marks)
3 Application of rules and regulations (theory) (10 marks)
4 Ability to analyse their own and others performance (theory) (10 marks)
5 Ability to improve their own and others performance (theory) (10 marks)
6 Adopting different roles in the game (theory) (10 marks)
ii) Producing a Health-related Exercise Programme (10%)
Each Student has to plan, perform and evaluate an exercise programme to improve his/her own fitness.
1 Planning the programme (20 marks)

4 Evaluating the programme (20 marks)
5 Leading a warm up/cool down (10 marks)
Theory Element (40%)
The Theory element will cover the following areas:
Section A Health, fitness and the factors affecting performance in games.
Section B Principles of training.
Section C Factors affecting individual performance and participation.
Section D Social and cultural factors affecting participation.
Body Systems, Skeletal Systems, Muscular Systems, Circulatory Systems, Respiratory Systems, Diet, Health, Fitness, Psychological factors, Acquisition of skill, Technological developments, Safety and risk assessment.
Warm up & Cool down, Physiological factors, Fitness training, Changing Training Regimes,
Alcohol and Smoking, Drugs, School, Changing attitudes, Social groupings, Leisure time, Facilities, Sponsorship, Media, Social and cultural aspects, Influences of local and national providers.
Setting
The students will be set in classes according to College policy. Set placements are continually reviewed, particularly after the first Quality Mark, and again after each exam.
Students will sit a mock examination based on questions from past papers.
Each student will be given homework every week relating to the work covered in theory lessons.
Students have found the course both interesting and rewarding. Many have gone on to study Physical Education at AS/A Level, a course that is available in our Sixth Form.
Students who wish to consider taking GCSE Physical Education are most welcome to come and have a talk with any of the Physical Education staff.
