Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 & 11) Business


Students in Years 9, 10 and 11 study either the AQA Applied Business GCSE (Double Award) course, the AQA GCSE Business Studies course or the new Edexcel BTEC First Certificate in Business.
 

GCSE Business Studies

Outline of the course

This course covers the core topics necessary to an understanding of the world of business; its organisation, structure, activities and the impact it has on the wider economic and social environment.

Awarding Body

AQA

Length of the course

Three years, beginning in Year 9.

What does it lead to?

GCSE at Levels 1 or 2 (A* to G)

How is the course assessed?

There are two examinations at the end of the course and a coursework component worth 25% of the total assessed marks.
 

Applied Business GCSE

Outline of the course

This course involves a vocational investigation of the most important business topics that affect an individual seeking employment in the world of business and commerce. There is a ‘hands on’ approach and students are expected to visit businesses and undertake independent investigation of the business environment. There course is no longer offered to new students beginning Key Stage 4 in Year 9.

AQA

Length of the course

Three years, beginning in Year 9.

What does it lead to?

Two GCSE at Levels 1 or 2 (A*A* to GG)

How is the course assessed?

There is one examination studied in Year 11 and two extensive coursework units that are worth 66% of the total assessed marks.
 

BTEC First Certificate in Business

Outline of the course

This course involves a vocational investigation of the most important business topics that affect an individual seeking employment in the world of business and commerce. There is a ‘hands on’ approach and students are expected to visit businesses and undertake independent investigation of the business environment.

Edexcel

Length of the course

Three years, beginning in Year 9.

What does it lead to?

Level 2 Certificate (Pass, Merit or Distinction) broadly worth the equivalent of two GCSEs

How is the course assessed?

Assessment is entirely by centre assessed coursework, which is externally verified.
 

Key Stage 4

At KS4 students Quality Marks are awarded for progress on GCSE courses.

These marks are recorded in student planners along with an appropriate strategy for improvement. Marks are centrally recorded on the College and Curriculum Area databases. Students’ marks for individual coursework units are also recorded on a Curriculum Area database that is used continuously to set targets for students.

Staff review student target grades on a termly basis, following discussion with students.

In addition, students undertake Mock Exams in all three years.
