Assessment

We have worked hard to develop excellent methods of assessment for achievement/attainment. An A-E scale is used extensively throughout the KS3 for this. In addition we award 3 “quality marks” over the course of the year. These are aimed specifically at key areas (research, design, etc.) and detailed criteria is written for each one. The marks awarded are out of 20 for KS3 students and are directly related to National Curriculum levels. At KS4 the marks are directly linked to GCSE levels. Formal examinations are carried out each year.

Monitoring

As part of the College’s continuing quality initiative programme, monitoring of lessons by means of classroom observations began in 1996. This is a supportive, positive exercise and the process has now been developed to include the following areas of focus.

Teaching
Classroom discipline
Homework
Expectations
Assessment
Progress

Monitoring is carried out using OFSTED criteria and marked accordingly. Feedback is given to the individual member of staff as soon as possible. Advice and targets are given where necessary.

Behaviour - Rewards and Sanctions

Tollbar BEC Technology Award StickerWe like to recognise and formally reward progress at all academic levels. To do this we have award stickers, which are fixed into the individual pupil planners. The award can be made for any kind of clear academic or behavioural progress in technology. The progress can be measured over a few lessons or may result from perseverance over a longer time-span. An exceptional piece of work alone could also warrant a sticker. The determining factor is teacher judgement.

Good behaviour and safety is seen as a priority. In our view, no student has the right to interrupt the teaching of others through disruptive behaviour. To ensure consistency across the faculty we have a “stepped” action plan. This finally results in the whole College detention system.
