HUMAN BIOLOGY
What is the course about?
The course will appeal to those students who:-
- Have an interest in the study of living organisms, including the anatomy and physiology of the Human Body. Enjoy carrying out investigations in the laboratory or as fieldwork.
- Have an interest in the development of new biology topics eg. genetic engineering, biological basis of cancer, In Vitro Fertilisation and disease control etc.
Students can also use Human Biology to support other qualifications.
What will I learn?
AS MODULES:-
- Module 1: Molecules, cells and systems
- Module 3: Pathogens and Disease (Human Disease, Defence and Control)
- Module 4: Laboratory and investigation skills (coursework).
Human Biology A/S includes the Core Foundation Science of how cells function including microscope work and some biochemistry. It also includes some body system physiology and diseases of these systems e.g. Heart and Circulation and Heart Disease. Investigative laboratory skills are assessed (on a similar line to GCSE but at higher levels). ‘New’ Biology topics e.g. genetic engineering are also included.

When does the course start?
The course starts in September of each year.
How do I attend?
Normal daytime attendance.
Where applicable this subject may also be taken as a part time evening programme.
One Day Intensive programme for Mature Students to give A level in one year.
Who is the awarding body?
AQA – Specification A.
How long does the course last?
The course is taught as a one year programme for AS with progression to a second year for A2.
What can I do next?
You may progress to A2 level from AS
AS and A2 levels are recognised qualifications for a wide range of courses in Higher Education.
Are there any entry requirements?
GCSE Biology or Dual Science Award, Grade C or above (Grade B preferred) or equivalent relevant qualification.

No.

How is the course assessed?
AS Human Biology
Two written External Module examinations each written unit = 75 marks 1½ hours 35% Total A/S.
One Centre Assessed Module of Practical Coursework Skills 30% Total A/S
How much does the course cost?
All students who are joining a full time course and are under 19 years of age on the 1st September as their course commences, will not be required to pay tuition fees or examination fees.

Are there any exam fees?
Exam fees are not payable by 16-19 year olds sitting these units for the first time.
Mature students will be advised as to the exam fees when enrolling prior to the start of the course.
