What is the course about?

The course is about different aspects of the English Legal System from law making to the practical application of criminal law. The course is designed to give the student an understanding of the effects of law and the legal system upon professional and private life and cover areas such as criminal and civil court proceedings; the work of solicitors, barristers and judges; sources of law (including EU law); individual freedoms and police powers of arrest and detention. In addition aspects of Criminal law and Liability in Negligence are studied in more detail.

What will I learn?

There are 3 modules: -

Module 1: Law Making in Britain and the effect of law from the EU

Module 2: Dispute Solving including court procedures and legal personnel

Module 3: The Concept of Liability in Criminal Law & Negligence

When does the course start?

The course starts in September of each year.

How do I attend?

Normal daytime attendance.

Where applicable this subject may also be taken as a part time evening programme.

AQA

How long does the course last?

The course is taught as a one year programme.

What does this course lead on to?

You may progress to A2 level.

AS and A2 levels are recognised qualifications for a wide range of courses in Higher Education, for example degrees in law, criminology or other social sciences or higher qualifications in accountancy.

What subject entry requirements are there?

Students will need a good GCSE in English preferably a B or above.

Are there any other requirements?

Students will need a lively active mind and be able to create and sustain written arguments. Students will need to be motivated to take responsibility for their own learning by reading around topics in preparation for lessons and to assist them in completing assessed pieces of work. Students will be required to undertake research by using the library, CD-ROM’s and the Internet to access information. Students must purchase 'AQA Law for AS' by Jacqeline Martin.

How is the course assessed?

Each module is assessed by a written examination paper. Module 1 and 2 each consist of a 1-hour exam where students choose 2 essay questions from a choice of 5. Module 3 is a 1-hour exam consisting of two compulsory multi-part questions based on a problem scenario.

How much does the course cost?

All students who are joining a full time course and are under 19 years of age on the 1st September as their course commences, will not be required to pay tuition fees.

Are there any exam fees?

Exam fees are not payable by 16-19 year olds sitting these units for the first time.
Mature students will be advised as to the exam fees when enrolling prior to the start of the course.
