AS CRITICAL THINKING  (AS only)

What is the course about?

This course is different from all other subjects at AS Level. It does not involve learning any facts, but as the title suggests, it is about learning how to think and reason, as well as how to write in a coherent and logical way.
Although these skills are particularly applicable to subjects such as English, Psychology, Sociology, History and Law, taking Critical Thinking will be beneficial to any candidate. It will show that such candidates have attained a national standard in skills which will be valued by universities and employers alike.

What will I learn?

  • Identify the elements of reasoning and the structure of an argument
  • Evaluate reasoning of different kinds, using a wide variety of resources
  • Clarify expressions and ideas to present arguments clearly (in oral and written form)

When does the course start?

The course starts in September of each year.

How do I attend?

Normal daytime attendance.

Who is the awarding Body?

OCR

How long does the course last?

The course is taught as a one year programme.
It is only available as an AS level

What can i do next?

This course supports applicants wishing to undertake Higher Education.

Are there any entry requirments?

Grade A to C in English GCSE

Are there any other requirements?

A willingness to engage in discussion in oral and written forms.

An interest or interests in any subject or area will be useful.

How is the course assessed?

By two examination, both 1½ hours, taken in May/June.

How much does the course cost?

All students who are joining a full time course and are under 19 years of age on the 1st September as their course commences, will not be required to pay tuition fees or examination fees.
Otherwise: To be confirmed.

Are there any exam fees?

Exam fees are not payable by 16-19 year olds sitting these units for the first time.
Mature students will be advised as to the exam fees when enrolling prior to the start of the course.
